A Joyful Start Begins at IDEA

Beginning in the 27-28 school year, select IDEA campuses will offer a full-day Pre-K 4 program for children aged 4-year-olds by September 1.

Families can expect:

  • A full school day of learning and purposeful play
  • One certified teacher and one co-teacher in each classroom
  • Classrooms serving up to 22 children
  • Free breakfast and lunch
  • Developmentally appropriate, hands-on learning
  • Support for children with IEPs, 504 Plans, language needs and other learning needs
  • Transportation available at select campuses for eligible students
  • A strong family-school partnership built through regular two-way communication
  • A connected pathway from Pre-K through 12th grade at IDEA

Learning Through Purposeful Play

Children learn best when they can explore, create, talk, move and try new things. At IDEA Pre-K, play is connected to meaningful learning goals.

Your child may:
  • Build vocabulary through stories, songs and conversations
  • Practice counting, sorting and recognizing patterns
  • Explore plants, animals, weather and the world around them
  • Create, build and solve problems with classmates
  • Develop independence through classroom routines
  • Practice sharing, listening and expressing emotions
  • Strengthen coordination through movement, art and outdoor play

Children are not expected to arrive knowing everything. Our teachers meet each child where they are and help them grow with patience, encouragement and caring support.

Why Pre-K Matters

The early years are an important time in a child’s development. A positive Pre-K experience can help children enter Kindergarten feeling more confident, comfortable and ready to learn.

At IDEA Pre-K, children begin developing:

At IDEA, we know Pre-K is a big and exciting step for both you and your child. That’s why we’re here to answer questions parents like you may have about our program: 

IDEA will offer Pre-K 4. Children must be 4 years old on or before September 1 of the school year they will attend.

Purposeful play connects activities children enjoy—such as building, storytelling, movement, art and outdoor exploration—to meaningful learning goals. Children have fun while developing skills that prepare them for Kindergarten.

Yes. IDEA Pre-K is a full-day program that includes learning, purposeful play, movement, meals, exploration and time to rest or recharge.

Yes. IDEA Pre-K is free for eligible students. Free breakfast and lunch are also included during the school day.

To be eligible for enrollment in a free prekindergarten class, a child must be at least four years of age on or before September 1 of the current school year and meet at least one of the following eligibility requirements:

  • unable to speak and comprehend the English language
  • is educationally disadvantaged (eligible to participate in the national school lunch program… guidelines about NSLP eligibility can be found in sections 4 and 6 of the Texas Department of Agriculture’s Administrators Reference Manual )
  • is homeless, as defined by 42 USC, §11434a 
  • is the child of an active duty member of the armed forces of the United States, including the state military forces or a reserve component of the armed forces, who is ordered to active duty by proper authority
  • is the child of a member of the armed forces of the United States, including the state military forces or a reserve component of the armed forces, who was injured or killed while serving on active duty
  • is or has ever been in the conservatorship of the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (foster care) following an adversary hearing held as provided by Family Code §262.201 or has been in foster care in another state or territory, but currently lives in Texas
  • is the child of a person eligible for the Star of Texas Award as:
  • is the child of a person employed as a classroom teacher at a public primary or secondary school in the school district that offers a prekindergarten class under this section.

Enrolled IDEA Pre-K students will not need to re-enter the lottery for Kindergarten when their families complete the required Intent to Return and re-registration steps

No. IDEA Pre-K will launch at 18 select campuses across Austin, El Paso, the Rio Grande Valley and San Antonio for the 2027–28 school year.

Children must meet the age requirement and applicable state Pre-K eligibility requirements. Families should still begin an application even if they are unsure. An IDEA team member can help determine eligibility and explain what documents are needed.

Children will build early reading, language, math, problem-solving, social-emotional and classroom skills through hands-on activities, exploration and purposeful play.

Transportation is available at select IDEA regions and campuses that currently offer bus service. It is not available at all campuses.

At participating campuses, transportation may be available for eligible students who live within the campus’s 8-mile Optimal Operating Zone. Eligibility and availability depend on the family’s home address and current transportation routes.

Yes. IDEA supports students with IEPs, 504 Plans and other individual learning or accessibility needs. Families should share relevant information during enrollment so the campus can prepare appropriate support.

Each planned classroom will serve up to 22 children with one certified teacher and one co-teacher approximately one adult for every 11 students.
