Erica Matamoros is a dedicated school leader and collaborator who has spent nearly two decades working alongside passionate educators to build strong, supportive school communities.
Erica’s journey in school leadership is deeply rooted in Brownsville, Texas. She has worked for the Brownsville Independent School District as a teacher and for Port Isabel School District as an Assistant Principal. In 2012, she had the privilege of serving as the launching Principal of IDEA Brownsville Academy. Over six vibrant years, she worked together with local families, teachers, and staff to build a welcoming school culture from the ground up. Under her leadership, the campus earned recognition for meeting the 90/60/30 goal for three consecutive years. The campus gained multiple accolades, such as Best Academy and Campus of the Year. In addition, she was awarded the Financial Stewardship & Talent Manager Award. Her deep proficiency in Relay Graduate School of Education frameworks, including rigorous Observation-Feedback cycles and Weekly Data Meetings, has allowed her to scale effective instructional practices across multiple campuses.
After six successful years as a campus principal, Erica was promoted to Vice President of Schools in 2018. The following year, she was featured in Driven by Data 2.0 by Paul Bambrick-Santoyo. In 2021, she was promoted to Senior Vice President continuing her journey leading schools in the Lower Valley. Her years serving students, families, and educators in Brownsville helped shape a leadership philosophy rooted in local decision-making, strong relationships, and a deep connection to the community.
Erica’s educational journey includes a Bachelor of Science from University of Texas at Brownsville, a Master of Education in Special Education from Texas Tech University and principal credentials acquired through the Region One Integrated Leadership Preparation. Erica enjoys the beach, cooking, being around loved ones, and spending time with her four amazing pups.
