Chanel Hurd grew up watching her mother, Allison, pour her heart into her classroom and her students. Now, she’s following in those same footsteps — not only as an IDEA educator, but as a beacon of teamwork. This year, Chanel received the Network Core Values Award for We Build Team & Family — the same prestigious honor her mother earned two years earlier — making IDEA history together as a mother-daughter duo.
Two years earlier, Chanel’s mother Allison, a Special Education teacher at IDEA Edgecliff, became IDEA’s first-ever recipient of the Core Values Exemplar Award for We Build Team and Family. Known for her tireless work ethic, kindness, and commitment to her students and colleagues, Allison transformed her classroom into a welcoming space where everyone feels supported. Her classroom became famous for the snacks she keeps on hand for anyone who needs an energy boost — and for always having an open door (and open heart) when someone needs to talk.
Allison’s influence runs deep — especially with her daughter, Chanel, who followed in her footsteps not only as an IDEA educator but also as a beacon of teamwork and inclusion. This year, Chanel received the same prestigious honor, earning recognition as the Network Core Values Winner for We Build Team & Family, just like her mother.
Chanel shared that her mother’s example shaped the way she leads:
“My mother works tirelessly to ensure everything is done correctly and on time. She’s always there for others, regardless of whether it’s her responsibility. Because of her, I strive to include everyone and help in any way I can. My success in receiving this award is because of her influence and dedication.”
