It Takes a Village: How AP Teachers Achieve Academic Excellence

Advanced Placement Curriculum (AP) at IDEA Public Schools exposes students to college-level work before they reach an undergraduate setting in college. AP is a rigorous, nationally standardized curriculum from the College Board that prepares students for success in college.

At IDEA, our mission is to prepare ALL students for success to and through college. This means that ALL students deserve access to rigorous college preparatory experiences that will prepare them to succeed in college and beyond.

Disciplinary Literacy

From Kindergarten through senior year, teachers at IDEA Public Schools prioritize disciplinary literacy in the classroom. Through hands-on learning, writing analysis, and group activities, students have opportunities to engage in practices specialized within each discipline in our schools.

Teachers develop content literacy through professional development and opportunities to engage with educators in their field. This summer, AP Human Geography teachers participated in the 2024 AP Reading in Cincinnati, Ohio and virtually to gain an in-depth understanding of the AP Exam and to better assess their own students’ work.

AP Reading 2024

This summer, nine AP Human Geography teachers applied and were selected to become authorized AP readers in the 2024 AP Reading. IDEA Public Schools had one of the largest representations of AP readers from a district with eight in-person AP readers and one at-home participant.

AP Human Geography teacher and course leader, Amanda Calderon, encouraged teachers to apply to the AP Reading program after attending last year.

“When teachers attend the AP Reading, they are getting firsthand experience of the way the AP Exam is scored,” Calderon said. “That’s a big win for student success.”

Connecting with like-minded educators is part of the experience, like Allison Cecil, Chief AP Reader who oversees the scoring process for AP Human Geography exams.

“Getting to meet and interact with other people who teach the course is like developing a huge professional learning community that expands across the country and beyond,” Cecil shared.

Advanced Placement (AP) readers evaluate and score AP students’ written responses, ensuring that students receive AP scores that accurately reflect college-level achievement in respective subject areas. AP readers are course-authorized high school teachers actively teaching an AP subject.

“It Takes a Village”

AP Human Geography is the first Advanced Placement class students take at IDEA Public Schools. Amanda Calderon emphasizes the importance of creating a culture of achievement in the AP classroom.

“It takes a village to create a strong AP foundation for students, but I am so lucky to work with such a dedicated group of teachers who strive to give their students the best outcome for college readiness,” Calderon added.
