IDEA Public Schools in the Rio Grande Valley are empowering creativity, confidence, and college readiness through its newest elementary Fine Arts elective. Crayons to and Through College (CTTC) is a regionally developed elective curriculum that nurtures creativity and collaboration through four content areas: Art, Theater, Music, and Robotics.
Mission
Crayons to and Through College ignites creativity and college readiness through Fine Arts. The program’s mission is to ensure every child experiences the power of Art, Music, Theater, and Robotics as pathways to self-expression, leadership, and academic success – inspiring students to see Fine Arts as a pathway to college and lifelong confidence.

About
The program serves first through sixth grade students across 52 campuses, reaching over 18,000 students annually in the Rio Grande Valley. Through capstone projects at the end of each quarter, students will demonstrate their learning of each content area through showcases such as gallery walks, performances, and interactive exhibits. These experiences help foster a vibrant fine arts culture at IDEA and serve as powerful opportunities for students to showcase their talent, creativity, and confidence.
CTTC Course Leader and Teacher at IDEA Pharr, Cecilia Chavez, emphasizes the implementation of fine arts instruction in schools.
“We’re building a generation that sees the fine arts not as a side-interest, but as a real pathway to college and purpose,” Chavez said.
In this class, the arts are seen as a pathway to culture, leadership, and college readiness.
For third-grade student Alessandra Villarreal from IDEA Sports Park, she enjoys how CTTC has inspired her to bring ideas to life.
“Being in this program has opened my imagination and inspired new ideas,” she shared. “I’m excited to come to school every day because I don’t want to miss art or music.”
How it’s Going
This semester, Crayons to and through College classes have focused on the elements of art and music and will move into theater and robotics courses in the spring semester. Students and teachers alike are feeling the joy and benefits of participating in CTTC classes.
Crystal Moreno, CTTC Teacher at IDEA Palmview, says it’s a reminder of why she enjoys teaching.
“I feel connected to our school and students,” Moreno said. “Nothing makes me happier than seeing how excited they are when they come to class.”

Fourth-grade student at IDEA Palmview Kytzia Lopez is one of the students who looks forward to Ms. Moreno’s class each day.
“Every time we are in fine arts class, I always feel very happy,” Lopez added. “This class brings me so much joy!”
