Alethea Duncan began her career in education in 2001 and currently serves at IDEA Public Schools as the founding executive principal of IDEA A.W. Brown. She joined IDEA in 2019 as a Principal in Residency at IDEA Rise and in 2021, became the founding academy principal at IDEA Southeast.
Before joining IDEA, Alethea worked in the field of adult corrections for more than five years before being called to shift into prevention and early intervention. She earned her teaching credentials in 2001 and her classroom experience spans from elementary, secondary, traditional, and alternative school settings. Her passion for developing others led her to serve multiple leadership roles, including: lead teacher, parent education trainer, campus-based instructional coach, district-based instructional coach, district instructional expert teacher, special programs support administrator, program specialist, and assistant principal.
She believes her purpose is to serve all students, regardless of ethnicity, language, or socioeconomic background by developing other adult leaders to view students as investments rather than expenses and to help them achieve both social-emotional and academic success. She empowers leaders to utilize a continuous cycle of data analysis, purposeful planning, strategy implementation, progress monitoring, and refinement to ensure high levels of achievement for every student.
