A former Obama administration official and nationally recognized public charter school leader, Candice Burns brings over two decades of experience driving public engagement with impactful brand marketing and communications strategies.

As IDEA’s CCO, Candice oversees the network’s marketing, communications, and creative services. She’s also responsible for stewarding the IDEA brand regionally and nationally and is part of the leadership team that guides policy and advocacy strategies. Prior to IDEA, Candice was the chief communication officer for Friendship Public Charter Schools based in Washington, D.C. In the Obama administration, she served as communications director for the U.S. Department of Transportation’s third-largest agency, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. She was also a communications director for civil rights icon and U.S. Congressman John Lewis and the Congressional Black Caucus under the leadership of U.S. Congressman Elijah Cummings. Throughout her career, Candice’s work has appeared on various media platforms including the Washington Post, NPR, CBS, and FOX News Business. A champion for education equity, Candice and her husband Engel are the proud parents of two young sons.
