Allison Serafin

Executive Director, Greater Houston 

Allison is the Executive Director of IDEA Public Schools, Greater Houston Area where she is responsible for the successful launch and growth of twenty K-12 IDEA public schools. She has nearly 20 years of experience as an education leader and advocate for excellent public schools and is excited to return home to Houston to offer families an excellent tuition-free public school option for their children.

Prior to this, Allison was the Founder and President of Opportunity 180 in Las Vegas, Nevada where she recruited high-quality talent programs and charter school operators to expand to Southern Nevada. Under her leadership, Opportunity 180 received the state’s first harbormaster award of nearly ten million dollars and their efforts resulted in four new high-quality schools on track to serve low-income students by 2018-19.

Allison was also elected in 2012 to serve on the Nevada State Board of Education and was appointed Vice-President throughout her years of service. During her term, Allison successfully led an effort to ensure that all Nevada high school juniors would take ACT as a required exam for graduation and she worked alongside her colleagues to increase the rigor of high school graduation requirements.

Allison also has experience as a small business owner, teacher coach, corporate philanthropy executive, professional development facilitator and as a former HISD and YES Prep middle school English and history teacher.

She earned her BS in Political Science from Texas Christian University and MS in Social Work from the University of Texas at Arlington.
