IDEA Celebrates National Nutrition Month

The month of March is always a special month here at IDEA Public Schools.  Scholars and teachers are busy preparing for their first round of STAAR testing, more college acceptances are rolling in for our seniors, it’s IDEA’s birthday month, and…it’s National Nutrition Month!

IDEA is proud to celebrate National Nutrition Month, a time to spotlight nutrition education and healthy student diets across our campuses.  The national campaign focuses attention on the importance of making informed food choices and developing sound eating and physical activity habits.

Did you know?

IDEA’s Child Nutrition Program creates nutritious lunch menus, provides free breakfasts on every campus, and serves thousands of healthy and tasty lunches to our students.  These lunches are made even more delicious, organic, and local thanks to our Farm-to-School program, which adopts the “Farm to Table” dining model and sends produce directly from IDEA farms and gardens on campuses to our cafeterias. These farms are also utilized as outdoor classrooms, and with the help of our students, we’ve grown over 10,000 pounds of diverse crops for our cafeteria teams, who in turn prepare nutritious, delicious, organic, and local meals for our scholars.

Ensure your child is eating nutritious, delicious meals every day in school.  Enroll today.

IDEA’s Cookbook

Another Way IDEA is celebrating National Nutrition Month is through IDEA’s Cookbook! That’s right, we are compiling some of the IDEA Team & Family’s tastiest, healthiest meals for our r families to use to create recipes at home in the kitchen.  The most exciting part is that we want our students and families to join in on the delicious and nutritious fun.

IDEA is looking for submissions for healthy recipes from our students to have the chance to be featured on IDEA’s Cookbook!  Submissions will be accepted through Cafeteria Managers at your child’s campus and through this link.  We can’t wait to see what healthy meals our students whip up!

National School Breakfast Week

Part of National Nutrition Month is of course, National School Breakfast Week (NSBW), celebrated as a way to raise awareness about the availability of the School Breakfast Program.  This special week was held March 6 through March 10, and what a week it was for our campuses and organization.  Did you know IDEA serves over 22,000 free breakfasts daily?  That’s 110,000 breakfasts throughout 1 week!

This year, the NSBW theme was “Take the School Breakfast Challenge.”  Campuses across the network set up tables and events to promote healthy breakfasts, dressed up as some of our favorite fruits, held celebratory brunches in the cafeteria, created their own perfect breakfasts, and even made artwork as dedication to eating healthy breakfasts.  Our students and staff were certainly up for the challenge.

While we champion this month as a time to spotlight the work our Child Nutrition Team and cafeteria staff do to ensure our students lead happy, healthy lifestyles, we know that this work is done with a joy and passion all year long.  Healthy bodies, healthy mind, healthy results!
