Frequently Asked Questions About the First Week of School

The first week of school is an exciting time for our Team & Family! As we prepare for the best year yet, we wanted to share a few Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) that will help you prepare for the first day of school!

Who are my scholar’s teachers?

Your scholar’s teacher will be introduced before the first day of school during the Meet the Teacher event at your campus.

Your campus will contact you regarding the date and time for your scholar’s Meet the Teacher event during the summer.

May I have a tour of the campus before school starts?

Yes! We would love to show you where your scholar will begin their journey to and through college. We encourage you to attend your Welcome to IDEA event and the Meet the Teacher event. If you are unable to attend either event, please contact your campus to schedule a tour.

What is the school drop-off process*?

Classes begin at 7:30 a.m. Since the first week of school usually produces heavier drop-off traffic, we recommend that you arrive at least 30 minutes before class begins so that scholars have time to find their classroom before the morning bell.

For safety purposes, all IDEA Families are asked to drop off their scholars in the drop-off line in front of the school inside the school gates. Directional signage and IDEA staff will be in place to guide this process.

*Some campus schedules may vary. We encourage you to contact your campus to confirm drop-off and breakfast times.

What is the pick-up process at school*?

The instructional day ends at 3:45 p.m. Since the first week of school usually produces heavier traffic flows during this time, we recommend that you allow for extra time to pick up your child once school lets out.

For safety purposes, all IDEA Families are asked to pick up their scholars in front of their school inside the school gates. Directional signage and IDEA staff will in place to guide this process.

*Some campus schedules may vary. We encourage you to contact your campus to confirm pick-up times.

There seems to be a lot of traffic surrounding the school at pick-up and drop-off time. Will this always be the case?

During the first week of school, the pick-up and drop-off lines can create more traffic congestion around the school than normal. As our scholars and their parents get acclimated with the pick-up and drop-off process, the traffic tends to lessen. Thank you for your patience!

I tried calling the school, but no one answered. What should I do?

Your call is important to us. During the first week of school, campuses receive high volumes of phone calls. If your phone call is not answered right away, please leave a detailed message with your name, your scholar’s name, and a callback number so that a receptionist may return your call.

Where can my scholar catch the school bus?

If your scholar’s campus offers transportation, please log into PowerSchool via the website (powerschool.ideapublicschools.org). Click on the transportation tab to register for transportation services or verify your scholar’s bus stop information. Scholar routes should be available within two business days of submission.

What time do the schools serve breakfast and lunch?

Breakfast is typically served Monday – Friday from 7:30 -7:45 am. Campus leadership can decide to modify this for their campus.

Students who arrive late are offered breakfast either at the front office or in the cafeteria. Late breakfast can be offered up to 10 am, but the exact time window can be modified by campus leadership.

I have suggestions for making the beginning of the year better for IDEA families. Who may I contact to share my feedback?

We strive to make the beginning of the year a great process for our Team & Family, but there is always room for improvement. We want to hear from you. After school begins, please be sure to check our national Facebook page, where we will share a link to complete a Beginning of Year survey. We want to hear from all of our IDEA families and learn how we can improve.

Have a great first week of school, Team & Family!
